The name Esanatham is believed to originate from the ancient Isanathi Iswaran (Shiva) Temple, a powerful structural and cultural centerpiece that has stood for over 300 years.

Situated in the Aravakurichi Taluka of the Karur district, the village is bordered by the Vedasandur and Thanthoni blocks.

Agriculture is the lifeblood of Esanatham. The village is especially renowned across the state as a major producer and exporter of drumsticks (Moringa).
